At the Convention On Modern Liberty, Phil Booth of NO2ID issued an urgent call to action to anyone and everyone concerned about the threat to liberty posed by a government that is as rapacious for our personal information as it is incapable of protecting it.
This single clause is as great a threat as the entire national identity scheme.
Clause 152 of the Coroner and Justice Bill gives ministers the power to create and enforce, without scrutiny or oversight, 'information sharing orders' that let the government do whatever it wants with personal information held by any state organisation.
If it becomes law, then you will have no rights or guarantees concerning any personal information you provide the state (or that the state requires from you). The rule that information provided for one purpose cannot be used for another purpose will be completely replaced by the arbitrary, politically-driven whim of ministers.
NO2ID say that this clause cannot simply be amended or diluted, it must be completely removed from the bill. They ask that anyone concerned (and that should be you) take five minutes to write to their MP (via Write To Them) to let them know that you are concerned about clause 152 and that you refuse to give your consent to the proposed sharing of your information without regard to your rights. In your letter/email, mention the clause by name (Clause 152 in the Coroners and justice Bill) and that you refuse to give your consent and that you want the clause removed from the bill.
Do it now. The bill is before parliament, and to prevent this becoming law MPs need to know that their electorate will not stand for it.
